Now getting other people blogging again!

Some of our ideas from today…

  • Put posters around the school to encourage people to blog and to show off to visitors
  • Competition for the person who blogs the most in 2 weeks getting a reward
  • Digital Leaders to put up riddles on class blogs & encourage other children to respond
  • Different theme of challenges each week for new posts with house points for prizes
  • Use QR codes around the school to point you to specific posts on blogs to encourage visits & comment

Getting back to blogging!

Your challenge is to choose from one of these:

  1. Write a new blog post about something interesting you’ve done outside school. Could you add “three top tips for…”?
  2. Add some comments and likes to other people’s posts
  3. Give some top advice about how to stay safe online.
  4. Could you get your friends/family in other countries to visit to add more flags to your counter? (Bonus – get them to leave a comment!)
  5. Write a new blog post about something you know about.
  6. Do some research at home to do with your topic in school then share your new facts in a blog post.

Troubleshooting

One of the really important jobs of a Digital Leader is to troubleshoot problems, which means either fixing it or helping people to fix it for themselves.

When we come across a problem with technology problem, it’s really helpful to start with two questions:

  1. What did you expect to happen?
  2. What happened instead?

Having this information to start with helps us to explain and understand what’s happening.

Here are help sheets for some common problems…

We’ve also put these together into one document at Help Sheets Merged 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10

When troubleshooting, remember our usual 4 Bs:

  1. Brain (what you remember)
  2. Board (use your help sheets)
  3. Buddy (another Digital Leader?)
  4. Boss (an adult in your room, or Mr Jeffreys)

For some problems, we get all the way through this and still can’t fix it – that’s OK! We have a company we can call who can take a look if the problem’s too tricky for us to fix in school.

Digital Leader Application

Why I think I want to become a Digital Leader…

Firstly, I only want to become a Digital Leader is because …

  • I am really good with laptops, computers, tablets etc.
  • If anyone wants help with any devices, I will help them get the problem solved.
  • If the teachers or the people in assembly don’t know what to do, I will help them get it done.

Why I would be a good Digital Leader…

  • If someone doesn’t know how to do something I will help them.

What we use online

WIMG_3349e started by thinking of all of the different games, websites or programs we use at home. There were quite a few!

If you click on the picture, you can see it up close. Are there any other games, websites or programs that we’ve missed out?

It was quite hard to see all of these in a big jumble! Some of our Digital Leaders sorted them into different categories to see them more clearly…

Apple Store visit

theoracle_hero[1]Exciting news! Today I’ve spoken with the Apple Store in the Oracle who are keen for us to go back and work with them as they were so impressed with you back in June when they taught us how to troubleshoot problems with iPads.

This time we will focus on making our own video aimed at parents!

We’ve got two sessions in our timetable already to plan what we want to put in our video all about Staying Safe Online. As Digital Leaders, we should be experts on giving people good advice on how to make sensible decisions when online. This video is your chance to prove it!

We’re booked in to go there on Tuesday 15th December – but we need to have most things prepared before that! We’ll chat about this more after half term.

Our Lifetile Project

G0tIcG0b[1]Lifetile is a ‘digital shoe box’ to keep memories of photos, videos, writing and other things.

We’re using Lifetile for us to make our own ‘digital shoe boxes’ focused around three things:

  1. Family
  2. Food
  3. Global

Questions to start with…

  • Where were you born? (Can you add maps, photos or videos?)
  • What is your favourite meal to have at home? Why is the dish important to you?
  • Who cooks at home? How are you involved?
  • Are your meal recipes from a different country or culture?
  • Which different places have you lived in? (Don’t give away your address, just the areas)
  • Have your family got a ‘signature dish’ that you would like to share with your friends?

Untitled

How to start…

  • Sign up at lifetile.me with your school email address (@manorprimary.net)
  • Start off using these questions for yourself, then think about your parents, then your grandparents
  • We’ll meet again next week to chat things through – so don’t worry too much at the moment!

Letter to parents – May 2015

Parent letter – May 2015

Dear parent/carer,

As you know, your child applied and has been selected to be a Digital Leader. There are only 21 Digital Leaders for our whole school and we are expecting big things from them! For your information, the responsibilities of Digital Leaders are:

  1. Digital Leaders are confident to help others in the class use technology well
  2. Digital Leaders know how to stay safe online and how to give advice to others to do the same
  3. Digital Leaders are keen bloggers and use their class blog to share their learning
  4. Digital Leaders can provide some troubleshooting advice in their class for common problems with technology

We have met together this afternoon to get things started – but don’t worry, we don’t expect all of this to happen overnight!

I wanted to draw your attention to a couple of practical things at this stage:

  1. Your child now has access to the Digital Leaders Blog at http://dl.manorprimary.net which is where we will be sharing experiences, etc. As the year goes on they will increasingly take responsibility for this. They log into this with the usual username and password they use for their own class blog
  2. Your child has been setup a Google Apps for Education account under the school’s control. This means they have an email address (e.g. 16joeb@manorprimary.net) which we will use for a few things in school. Other children will also be getting these later in the year and next year but we are rolling this out first to the Digital Leaders. More info about Google Apps for Education is at google.com/edu

If you have anything you want to discuss with me, please feel free to visit via the School Office, call the office as usual, or email me on pjeffreys@manor.reading.sch.uk

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Jeffreys

Computing Coordinator

Successful Digital Leader Applications

This week the House Captains have had a hard job selecting from more than 30 applications to become a Digital Leader from children in years 1 to 6. We wanted to share with you the notes from the successful individuals who will become our school’s first Digital Leaders.

Ellie’s video and blog post to apply

Were impressed that Ellie video recorded herself and sent it to us…

She also blogged about wanting to apply to be a Digital Leader as well as sending in an application video!

Digital Leader Applications

Great news! We’ve had loads of interest from people wanting to become our first ever Digital Leader. The graph below shows the spread across different ages. We know that a few more children thought about getting involved but didn’t get organised to apply in time!

DL Applications

After seeing this graph, we spoke to a couple of classes in Y3/4 to ask the boys why they weren’t as interested. Quite a few of them wanted to have done it but were too disorganised to get applied (despite a few reminders!) One or two others said they’d thought about it but then decided not to go for it.

The applications were reviewed yesterday (based on “What are Digital Leaders?“) by the House Captains and the successful 21 applicants tomorrow!

How do I become a Digital Leader?

The House Captains will launch our Digital Leader programme after Easter. If you’re not sure what a Digital Leader is, have a look at this post here.

Anyone from Year 1 to Year 5 can apply to become a Digital Leader.

You need to apply by Thursday 30th April by:

You need to explain why you think you would make a good Digital Leader!

The House Captains and Mr Jeffreys will then choose up to 3 people in each class to become Digital Leaders.
